Since July 8, 2024 Samsung workers in South Korea who are members of the National Samsung Electronics Union, which represents more than 30,000 workers, have been brave and steadfast in their demands for improved annual leave, bonus transparency, better working conditions and wage increases, have started an indefinite strike against Samsung Electronics, the world's largest memory chip maker, a company whose position is very important and cannot be underestimated in the global market.
This strike was carried out as a last resort by the workers because of the arrogance of Samsung Electronics management who refused the invitation to negotiate with the workers over the company's disregard for basic rights and workers' welfare, even though the workers had submitted this invitation to negotiate many months ago.
Samsung Electronics is known as an aggressive company with anti-union tactics, continuing to prohibit its workers from forming unions for decades. However, Samsung workers in South Korea bravely showed the way of struggle and victory. Forming a labor union and launching a strike to force the Company to be willing to negotiate and meet the workers' demands.
For this reason, Gabungan Serikat Buruh Indonesia (GSBI), as the center of the struggle for workers and trade unions in Indonesia, together with all Indonesian workers, stands firmly in solidarity and fully supports the struggle of Samsung workers in South Korea and their labor unions who are on strike since July 8, 2024, for dignity and basic rights of workers in the workplace, as well as the welfare of workers and their families.
The attitude of Samsung workers in South Korea is clearly very much in line with GSBI's attitude towards workers' rights which must be respected and fulfilled, decent working conditions for workers, decent wages, freedom of association and workers' welfare. Moreover, GSBI member workers in companies supplying telecommunications electronic equipment including speaker units, micro speakers and audio receiver components which are core components for making earphones, headsets and various other audio devices for Samsung also experience the same problems of their basic rights and welfare.
The Center of Indonesian Labor Struggle - Gabungan Serikat Buruh Indonesia (GSBI) urged Samsung Electronics management to immediately fulfill all the demands of Samsung workers.
GSBI calls on Indonesian workers and all workers in the world to take inspiration from the courage of Samsung workers in South Korea to form a labor union, and collectively fight against the company's exploitative practices.
GSBI also invites all workers and labor unions in Indonesia and throughout the world to stand united in solidarity to support the struggle of Samsung workers in South Korea.
Believe that through collective action and solidarity, together we can pave the way to victory for every worker's struggle, for a better, fair and equitable world for all workers.
